ABOUT BOTOX®

Botox® is the brand name of botulinum toxin type A that has been in use since about 1990. In 2001, botulinum toxin type B was introduced under the brand name Myobloc®. Both forms of this naturally occurring substance, Botox® and Myobloc®, are injected into a muscle that is contracting abnormally. The medications partially weaken the nerve to the muscle for about four to six months. Botox® has thus proven very useful in people who suffer from abnormal muscle contractions.

Gradual relaxation of muscle spasm develops over one to two weeks after the injection of either agent. The reduction of muscle spasm lasts for 3-4 months and pain relief can last even longer. Conditions that are treated with Botox botulinum injections (Botox or Myobloc) include muscle contraction headaches, chronic muscle spasms in the neck and back, torticolis (severe neck muscle spasms), myofascial pain syndrome, and spasticity from multiple sclerosis or stroke.

BOTOX® THERAPY

Dystonia is involuntary rhythmic muscle contraction. It may occur by itself (unknown cause or "idiopathic") or as a consequence of another neurological disorder such as Parkinson's Disease. Dystonia may occur in just one group of muscles (focal dystonia) or all over the body (generalized dystonia). Before the development of Botox®, dystonia was a very discouraging illness to treat. Fortunately, Botox® and Myobloc® greatly improve the lives of those afflicted with this mysterious disorder.

When dystonia occurs in the neck, it is called torticollis (or cervical dystonia). Injections of Botox® or Myobloc® are the best treatment for torticollis.

Dystonia may occur in the arm or leg, sometimes constantly, sometimes only during activity. Botox® injections help block these abnormal movements.

Face - Most facial movement disorders respond to Botox®. Although an injection to the facial muscles sounds unpleasant,  physicians use the smallest available needle (30 gauge) to minimize any discomfort.

Spasticity (Muscle Tightness) - The brain controls the muscles by making them contract (tighten) or relax. When the brain is damaged (by stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, etc.), it may lose ability to relax the muscles. Sometimes the worst part of a brain injury is the involuntary muscle tightness, which may be very painful. This muscle tightness nearly always responds to a Botox® injection. This type of injection gives best results in the arm and in the leg below the knee.

Headache - Both migraine and tension-type headaches respond to Botox® injections. Scientific studies have established that about 80% of headache sufferers benefit from a Botox® injection.

Other Pain - Back pain and neck pain have been shown to respond positively to Botox® injection. Botulinum toxin continues to show considerable promise in ongoing scientific studies.

Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis) - Some people experience inappropriate sweating (hyperhydrosis), of the face, arm pits, or hands. Hyperhydrosis may occur during specific activity (e.g., eating) or all the time without explanation. Medications are often ineffective, but Botox® blocks the nerves to sweat glands, and may relieve some cases of hyperhydrosis.


COSMETIC USES OF BOTOX®

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason. In many cases, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a very effective method for reducing wrinkles.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to smooth wrinkles in the neck and face to create a more youthful appearance. It is especially useful in the eye area. Removing wrinkles from between the eyes can dramatically change a person’s look from one of permanent anger or sadness to one of contentment and restedness. It is also frequently used on the thin wrinkles that surround the eyes (often called “crows feet”), but can also be used in other areas, such as along the chin and jaw.

BOTOX® simply keeps the muscles that cause frown lines from contracting. This causes the skin to become smoother. Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. BOTOX® keeps that message from getting to the muscle that causes the wrinkles.  Once the muscles are at rest, the skin becomes smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Although anesthesia is not required for Botox treatments, your doctor may choose to numb the area being treated with a cold pack or an anesthetic cream. The procedure itself consists of several quick injections of the toxin into the targeted muscles using fine needles. It's quick and essentially painless, with the entire session taking about 10 to 15 minutes.

There is no recovery time needed after receiving Botox. Because your skin doesn't feel numb or change in texture, and there is generally no swelling or irritation, you will be able to resume regular activities immediately. Our doctor will advise you, however, not to massage or rub the treated area and to remain upright for several hours. This prevents the Botox from moving into areas around the injection site, where it could adversely affect other muscles. You will also be told not to exercise for 24 hours.

Do not expect an immediate transformation after your first visit. For most people, it takes between four and seven days for the drug to have full effect. Once it does, however, results last between three and four months.
